The Earth is Divided by Noah’s Sons and Giants still Exist – Genesis Chapter 10
by Sabrina Dawkins
Genesis chapter 5 gives the generations of Adam, and in Genesis chapter 10, we are given the generations of Noah after the flood. The children of Noah created different nations in the earth post-flood. Japheth’s sons are labeled as Gentiles. The word “nations” here means different areas in which close blood relatives settled; it doesn’t mean race in this context. Japheth’s sons divided into different Gentile island nations by their tongues and their families. Ham’s sons also divided into different countries and nations by their tongues and families. Shem’s descendants were divided by family, tongue, land, and nation and dwelt from Mesha on the way to Sephar. So there was division in the earth (Genesis 10:25).
Nimrod, the mighty hunter and creator of Babel, was Ham’s grandson by Cush. Ham’s son Mizraim fathered Casluhim, father of the Philistines. The father of Ashkenaz was Gomer, Japheth’s son. Shem’s lineal descendant Asshur built Nineveh. Sidon was Canaan’s firstborn.
At this point, all the nations are descendants of Noah. However, Genesis 6:4 says that after the time spoken of, there were also giants in the earth, when the sons of God had children with the daughters of men. So it appears as though fallen angels came to reproduce with the women of the earth after the flood and created more giants. In Numbers 13:33 the children of Israel saw the giants, sons of Anak, who came from the giants and lived in the land of Canaan. It’s not clear when the giants started populating the earth again, but the fact that they existed even after the flood is confirmed. And they were enemies of God, which is why Israel was to take over the land (Numbers 14:8-9).
