The Innocence of Adam and Eve – Genesis Chapter 2
by Sabrina Dawkins
By the seventh day, God had created the heavens, the earth, the fowls, the beasts, man, and the angels. We rest on the seventh day because God rested on the seventh day after completing his work; and we are made in his image.
Before man was created and before there was rain, God caused a mist from below to come up and water the entire land. God made Adam from the dust of the earth. And in breathing into Adam’s nostrils, God created a living soul.
The tree of life that God planted in the garden of Eden is a metaphor for himself as savior of man and source of eternal life. Satan is represented as the tree of knowledge of good and evil because he becomes Adam and Eve’s first encounter with evil.
Adam was to be a gardener in Eden and was warned not to give ear to Satan, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or he would die. He was given Eve so that he wouldn’t be alone and would have a suitable helper.
Adam named all the beasts and fowls, who had also been made from the dust. And Eve was made from Adam’s rib. So woman came from man, man did not come from woman. Adam and Eve were of the same flesh; they were essentially one. And metaphorically a husband and a wife are to become one flesh.
The fact that Adam and Eve were naked and were not ashamed indicates their innocence. They were like newborn babies in a new world, unashamed of their nakedness. Sexual desire had not yet taken hold.
