Unfair Sharing
by Sabrina Dawkins
If it were up to me,
I would give everyone
the same amount of land
and seeds.
Then we would know
what people do
with equal opportunity.
The fat democrat,
the local politician,
wanted to share.
He told me that my two pecan trees
were his.
In jest?
That seemingly barren pecan tree up the street
was his, he said.
And he generously said I could pick from it
so that I would give him
my pecans, since we’re sharing.
But there was no fruit on his tree.
And he saw on mine, there was plenty.
When I tried to explain to him
why my trees produced so many,
hoping he would start his own gardening,
he wasn’t interested in listening,
just complimenting me on learning so much.
You see, with a politician’s words and charm,
there was only one thing he wanted,
and it wasn’t wisdom
on how to grow his own food garden.
True story.
And his barren pecan tree
was actually his neighbor’s.
