The Difference Between Earthworms and Gummy Worms
by Sabrina Dawkins
The difference between gummy worms and earthworms
is that earthworms enrich and aerate the soil,
but gummy worms lay and rot in the soil, doing nothing
but releasing questionable ingredients into the dirt.
Hidden from sight, earthworms continuously work,
helping the soil become a hospitable environment for your crops,
moist, cushioned shoes for your delicate plant roots.
Hidden from sight, gummy worms stay in the same spot,
and when you uncover them, your soil is in the same condition
as it was before you put them in: hard, dry, infertile.
But gummy worms are pretty: colorful, bright. And they taste sweet.
Then you go to the dentist with holes in your teeth.
Genesis 3:6—the woman saw that the tree was good for food
and that it was pleasant to the eye.
However, in darkness they are unproductive, without life,
their beauty rotting in one place in the dirt
unless an insect is beguiled into thinking it’s found food,
then carries the artificial ingredients in its stomach
to another location to pollute more land.
Genesis 3:6—she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat
and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
The difference between a creature of God and a creature of Satan
is that the creature of God does good and enriches others.
But the creature of Satan only has the outer form of a creature of God,
maybe with some extra sparkle to trigger,
as John said, “the lust of the eyes.”
It decomposes in the dirt—not fast enough—
releasing chemicals foreign to the environment.
And there in the dark, covered from sight and far from detection
it makes its home forever and ever.
