Celebrity Spokesman – Don’t Be Like Mike

Celebrity Spokesman – Don’t Be Like Mike
by Sabrina Dawkins

I dreamed of watching Michael Jordan
dribble down the court.
He was drinking a lake-of-fire-orange slush.
(I know slush moves slower than water.)
But it didn’t make him play better.
In fact, he played worse.

He wore his blood-red jersey
from the Chicago Bulls.
The other team wore the white
version of the Bulls’ uniform.
But your eyes were only on Mike.
Twin teams like Jacob and Esau.

1996 (666) in his Gatorade commercial
he drank orange liquid,
an artificial potion.
Now non-athletes drink it also.

Promote a man to create a fan.
Make a star to make a buck.
He’s worth a lot to companies
by pushing their product.

Draw them in.
Pull them to the darkness
below the bleachers.
Take their money, their time,
their mind
as they follow bread and circuses,
a dream,
a handsome character
who will promote anything
to rise to the top in Satan’s game.
He became a competitive workhorse
for the wrong team.

The G.O.A.T among goats
promoting distraction and poison to fans
who want to share in Esau’s bread
and red pottage.
So they put on the red jersey too.
But it was the saints whom they fought against.
