Esau was a Goat and His God was His Belly – Genesis 27

Esau was a Goat and His God was His Belly – Genesis 27
by Sabrina Dawkins

When Rebekah heard Isaac tell their firstborn son to hunt deer and cook it for him so that he could bless Esau, Rebekah told Jacob to take from the flock two kid goats so she could cook them for Isaac. But Jacob told her that his father would know that it was he and not Esau who brought the cooked meat because of his smooth skin. So she put Esau’s clothes and also the hairy skins of the goats on Jacob so that when Isaac touched his younger son, he would feel like hairy Esau.

Goats are associated with Esau in this chapter. Isaac, whose eyes were so dim that he could not see in old age, felt a goat’s hairy skin wearing Esau’s clothes. And this was truly who Esau was, but Isaac could not discern it at the time.

“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Matthew 25:31-34

*Isaac, in error, could not bypass God’s plan for his sheep—to bless them.

Isaac said to Jacob, whom he thought was his oldest son Esau, “Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.” Genesis 27:29

God said, “Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.” Genesis 25:23

“And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.” Genesis 25:31-34

“For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.” Philippians 3:18-19
